Experience La Bohème is a 360◦  Interactive Opera Virtual Reality Experience. This immersive 360◦  experience allows the viewer to be placed on the stage during Act 3 of La Bohème. La Bohème is a romantic masterpiece by Giacomo Puccini and is both one of the world’s great love stories and one of the most beloved operas of all time. Set among the bustle of 19th century Paris, six impoverished bohemians and young artists struggle to make ends meet while falling in and out love—ultimately bonding together in the face of tragedy. The timelessness of La Bohème resonates just as deeply with contemporary audiences as it did at its premiere in 1896.

The main goal of this immersive experience is to create an engaging and interactive Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) experience that can excite younger audiences and expose them to the beauty and history of opera. Through the use of virtual reality, augmented reality and traditional videonarratives, Experience La Bohème  displays many aspects of creating a professional opera production. The video narratives included in Experience La Bohème  are interviews with the main characters including Soprano Anya Matanovič  (Mimi), Tenor Dominick Chenes (Rodolfo), Soprano Monica Yunis (Musetta) & Baritone Levi Hernandez (Marcello), Opera Colorado La Bohème Director Matthew Ozawa, and Opera Colorado Music Director Ari Pelto. Experience La Bohème  also includes an overview of the historical background of La Bohème and the set design, costumes, wigs and makeup. Student teams were responsible for creating the brand aesthetic, the construction and editing of each documentary segment and the development of augmented reality experiences.

The technology used to create this experience includes traditional filming, Augmented Reality (AR) using Aurasma, and 360 VR Capturing Devices powered by Hypercube, Unity, Vive interface, and Oculus Rift. Five Faculty from the University of Colorado Denver, Digital Design & Music Entertainment and Industry Studies directed and coordinated this massive project and 53 Digital Design and 3 Music Entertainment and Industry Studies students worked on the project. Mark Anton Read was VR director and the Immersive Virtual Reality Delivery Powered By: HYPERCUBE VR.
